Elie Beach

The curve of sand at Elie stretches golden and proper, backed by a low sea wall and a scattering of Victorian villas that have seen better decades. It's the kind of beach that rewards an early morning visit before the car parks fill up - quiet, walkable, and genuinely lovely if you catch the light right.

You get a decent stretch of sand for a paddle or a proper swim when the tide's out, plus a little promenade that doesn't try too hard to be anything it isn't. The water's cold, obviously. Worth a wetsuit if you're serious about it. Families with young kids will find it manageable enough for a couple of hours, though there's no massive infrastructure - a few cafes nearby, some rock pools if you're keen, and enough space to spread out a towel without feeling hemmed in.

Elie itself is a small East Neuk village that's been on the Fife coast for centuries, and the beach is its main draw. Leven, the nearest proper town a few miles inland, has the shops and facilities you'll need. The real appeal here is simplicity - there's no theme park element, no forced attractions. You come for the walk, the sea air, maybe fish and chips afterwards.
