Ell Barrow

You'll find yourself standing on the chalk downland near Devizes looking at what remains of a Neolithic long barrow - basically a massive earthen mound that's been here for roughly five thousand years. Ell Barrow is what archaeologists call a long barrow, a burial monument from the Stone Age, and what you're actually looking at is the physical proof that people were organising themselves into proper communities way back then.

It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of patience. From a distance it might just look like a lumpy bit of field, but once you're up close you start to see the shape - the elongated mound with its ditch running alongside. The Wiltshire downland around here is absolutely loaded with prehistoric sites, so Ell Barrow sits nicely alongside all that wider history. If you're walking the chalk ridges or exploring the area round Devizes, it's well worth the small detour.

Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from this one. Kids under ten might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already keen on prehistory - it's not a dramatic ruin or anything, just a very old bump in the landscape. Allow maybe thirty minutes if you're stopping specifically to look at it, though most people would visit while walking the surrounding countryside.

Both Brades Acre Camp Site and Little Owls Camping put you within reasonable distance for exploring Ell Barrow alongside the other downland monuments in this corner of Wiltshire. Check locally for access and current conditions before you head out - these sites can be on private land.
