Ellers Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction, Ellers Wood sits just outside Cockermouth and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Cumbrian forest - tall trees, soft ground underfoot, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. The wood itself is small enough that you won't need more than an hour or so to explore the main paths, which makes it ideal if you're after a quick leg-stretch between other activities rather than a full day out.

Walkers will appreciate the gentle terrain and the way the canopy filters the light, especially on bright days. Families with younger kids won't find anything particularly thrilling here - there's no playground or visitor centre - but if they're happy pottering about looking for sticks and spotting birds, they'll have a fine time. Autumn is when this place really earns its keep, with the leaf fall turning the forest floor into something properly golden.

Being so close to Cockermouth, it works well as a morning walk if you're staying at Castle Guards Farm Retreat or Forest Views Caravan Park nearby. Pair it with a walk into town for lunch and you've got yourself a solid half-day. The wood sits accessible from the road with obvious parking, and there's no entrance fee or booking required - just turn up. Don't expect facilities or facilities or marked trails to rival bigger Lake District attractions, but that's rather the point. Sometimes a simple walk through the trees is exactly what a park holiday needs.
