Elsdon Wood

Walk into Elsdon Wood and you're immediately under a proper canopy - the kind of place where the light filters through in green-gold streaks and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working forest near Presteigne, managed by the Forestry Commission, with a network of paths threading through mixed woodland that shifts from dense conifers to sections of oak and beech. The main draw is straightforward: solid, unshowy walking through genuine forest without the theme-park feel.

This is walker territory, not a dawdle spot. You'll want decent boots - the ground holds moisture even after dry spells - and at least two hours to properly explore. It's the kind of place where families with children old enough to manage muddy terrain will have a genuinely good time, but toddlers might find the paths less forgiving than they'd like. The views are internal rather than panoramic; you're absorbed into the woodland rather than looking out across it.

What works best is timing it as part of a broader Wye Valley loop from Presteigne. You're close enough to Locksters Pool and Heart of the Wye Glamping to make a day of it - forest walk in the morning, then the river and market town exploration later. There's something restorative about a proper wood walk before settling into a holiday park, and Elsdon delivers that without pretension. Not Instagram-friendly, but genuinely good.
