Elworthy Barrows

Two Bronze Age burial mounds sit on a ridge near Elworthy village, about six miles south-west of Taunton, commanding views across the Somerset levels. They're barely dramatic - just grassy humps really - but if you're into archaeology or simply fancy a proper moorland walk, they're worth the detour.

You can wander right up to them; there's no fencing or visitor centre nonsense. The site is free and accessible pretty much whenever you fancy it. Allow half an hour if you're just popping in for photos, longer if you're the type to sit and imagine Iron Age funeral rites while staring at the landscape.

These barrows date back roughly 3,500 years. Not much survives visibly - time and ploughing have flattened them considerably - but that's part of the charm if you're keen on reading the land itself. Kids might find them a bit underwhelming unless they're proper history enthusiasts, though the surrounding moorland does offer decent walking territory.

If you're based at Middle Stone Farm Glamping or Waterrow Touring Park - both within easy striking distance - combine this with a ramble across the Brendon Hills. The Exmoor edge is close enough to make a proper day of it. Best visited when the light's low and golden, early morning or late afternoon, when the barrows cast proper shadows and the whole thing feels less like a forgotten bump in a field and more like something genuinely ancient.
