Somerset's county town rarely gets the credit it deserves, sitting quietly in the Tone Valley while tourists rush past to the coast or moors. But Taunton has substance - proper Georgian streets, a thriving market, and the kind of working atmosphere that makes you feel like you're experiencing real England rather than a tourist version of it.

The surrounding countryside is absolutely cracking. Head north and you'll hit the Quantock Hills, where ancient sites like Elworthy Barrows dot the landscape and dense woodlands like Hartrow Brake and Leigh Wood offer proper walking without the crowds. Willett Hill provides panoramic views across the vale, while archaeology buffs will find themselves spoilt for choice with Wiveliscombe Roman Auxiliary Fort and the Iron Age remains at King's Castle.

For a proper day out, the West Somerset Railway runs steam trains from nearby Bishops Lydeard station - the Gauge Museum there is worth a look if you're into railway heritage. Golf enthusiasts will appreciate Oake Manor Golf Course, set in rolling countryside just outside town.

Taunton sits bang in the middle of the M5 corridor, making it ridiculously easy to reach by car. The train station has direct services to London and the Southwest, though you'll want wheels to explore those Quantock villages properly.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around here makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a proper meal, yet surrounded by that gorgeous Somerset countryside. Plus you've got easy access to both Exmoor and the coast at Minehead - though honestly, with woods like Syndercombe and Clatworthy on your doorstep, you might not feel the need to venture much further.
