Ely Wildspace sits right on the edge of town and does exactly what it says - gives you a proper bit of wild nature without having to trek far from civilization. It's a stretch of meadow and wetland that's been left to do its thing, and that means you get wildflowers, birds, and that lovely sense of space you rarely find near a town centre.

The main draw is the walking. There are paths threading through the meadow, and depending on the season you'll catch different things - spring brings the flowers, summer gets raucous with insects and birds, autumn's when the light turns golden. It's not dramatic or showy, which is precisely the point. This is the kind of place where you slow down.

Walkers will get the most from it, especially anyone keen on spotting birds or wildflowers. Kids might manage twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into nature spotting. The site's free and open to the public, though there's not much in the way of facilities - no cafe, no visitor centre, just you and the landscape.

It pairs well with a stay at Hatters Meadows, just two miles away, and makes a decent morning wander before heading into Ely Cathedral or exploring the town itself. Allow an hour if you're taking it slowly, less if you're just after a quick walk. Go in late spring or early summer when the place is actually alive rather than dormant.
