Emanuel Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured visitor attraction, Emanuel Wood sits east of Royston and delivers what you come for: trees, quiet, and a break from the Essex flatlands. The forest floor is soft underfoot, paths wind through decent-sized oaks and birch, and on a weekday morning you might not see another soul.

It's the kind of place where families with young kids can let them loose without worrying they'll wander onto a main road, and where serious walkers won't feel they're just shuffling round a theme park version of nature. There's something genuinely restorative about it, though if you're expecting dramatic vistas or rare wildlife, you'll be disappointed. It's woodland, not wilderness.

The nearest decent base is Royston, a solid market town with decent facilities. If you're camping, Pightle Farm Campsite is only five miles away and worth considering for a longer Essex stay - that sort of distance means you're not entirely dependent on the campsite for entertainment. Hidden Gem Glamping sits a bit further out at 5.6 miles if you prefer something with a touch more comfort.

Allow an hour or so for a proper wander. Spring's best when the woodland floor comes alive, though winter has its own appeal if you don't mind the damp. Free to access as far as I can tell, and no facilities once you're in, so bring water. It won't change your life, but it's exactly what an Essex forest should be.
