Emstrey Rough

This isn't somewhere you'd plan a day trip around - it's more a decent walk if you're already camping nearby in Shropshire. Emstrey Rough is a modest woodland patch just outside Shrewsbury, the sort of place locals know about and tourists miss entirely.

What you get is a straightforward forest walk. Trees, paths, air that doesn't smell of exhaust fumes. It's proper quiet and works well if you've got restless kids or just need to stretch your legs between campsite meals. The woodland's thick enough that you feel genuinely away from it all, even though Shrewsbury's right there. Nothing dramatic - no ruins, no views, no information boards telling you what you're looking at - but that's partly why it's worth knowing about.

Families with younger children will get the most from it. The ground's soft underfoot and it's hard to get properly lost. Walkers chasing serious miles might find it a bit short on character. If you're staying at Love2Stay just down the road, or any of the caravan parks scattered round Condover way, it's a handy twenty-minute escape. Combine it with a look around Shrewsbury town centre - the medieval bits are genuinely good - and you've got half a decent day.

There's no visitor facility that I could find, no cafe, no entrance fee as far as I know. Turn up, walk, leave. Best in dry weather when the paths aren't boggy. Go early or late if you want solitude.
