Enclosure on Cockfield Fell

Up on Cockfield Fell, there's an Iron Age enclosure that most people drive straight past without noticing. It's the sort of archaeological site that rewards a bit of legwork - the earthworks are still visible if you know where to look, though calling it a dramatic landscape feature would be overselling it. You're looking at ancient defensive ditches and banks, the bones of a settlement from two thousand years ago.

The walk out there from Bishop Auckland is the real point. You get proper fell-top views across County Durham, and on a clear day the effort feels worthwhile. It's not a destination that'll occupy you for hours - thirty minutes of poking about is usually enough - but it works well if you're already hiking in the area.

History enthusiasts will get more from it than families with young kids. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards worth mentioning, so you need to come with a bit of background knowledge or use your phone to fill in the gaps. The site's free to access, which is just as well given there's no infrastructure at all.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Cragwood or Stag Park are both within walking distance of Bishop Auckland - this fits nicely into a day's exploring the wider fell landscape. Don't plan a trip just for this, but if you're hiking nearby and interested in Iron Age settlement patterns, the enclosure is worth the detour. Fair weather and decent boots are essential.
