Epynt Visitors Centre

The Epynt Visitors Centre sits on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, a proper outpost for understanding what makes this chunk of Powys tick. It's essentially your crash course in the military history of the Epynt range - which used to be an active training ground - plus the geology, wildlife, and farming heritage of the uplands. Not the flashiest museum you'll visit, but it does the job of filling in the blanks before you head out walking.

You'll get most out of it if you're genuinely interested in Welsh military history or the landscape itself. Families with young kids might find it a bit dry unless they're already keen on that sort of thing. The real draw is using it as a starting point - grab the maps, get oriented, then head out into the actual hills. There's good walking country all around.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. The centre is free or very cheap (exact details aren't locked down online, so ring ahead). Llangammarch Wells is your nearest proper town, about ten minutes away - decent spot for lunch before or after.

If you're based at Riverside Caravan & Camping Park or Irfon River just down the road, the Epynt Centre makes a sensible rainy-day option before you get back to hiking. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're doing a proper walking holiday in this area. Otherwise, skip it and just hit the hills.
