Esgair y Ceunant

Standing at 734 metres, this Snowdonian peak offers a proper workout without the tourist hordes that swarm Snowdon itself. Esgair y Ceunant sits between the Llanberis Pass and Ogwen Valley, giving walkers cracking views across to the Glyderau range and down to Llyn Padarn.

The ascent from the Llanberis side is steep and relentless - definitely one for experienced hillwalkers rather than casual weekend warriors. You'll be scrambling over loose rock in places, and the weather can turn nasty without warning. That said, the summit rewards with genuinely spectacular panoramas that feel properly earned.

Families with young children should probably give this one a miss. It's demanding terrain that requires proper boots and mountain sense. Solo walkers and serious hiking groups will love the solitude though - you're more likely to meet sheep than other people up here.

Allow a full day for the round trip from Llanberis, and check the weather forecast religiously. The proximity to holiday parks like Snowdon View and Bryn Gloch makes it a decent option for those staying in the area who fancy something more challenging than the tourist trails. Just don't expect any facilities at the summit - this is raw Welsh mountain country at its most uncompromising.
