Esgyrn Wood

The woodland around Esgyrn, just inland from Fishguard, is proper walking country - dense, quiet, and exactly the sort of place where you'll lose the sound of traffic within five minutes. It's mixed forest, the kind with enough variation to hold your interest rather than feeling repetitive, and the ground underfoot is manageable even after rain, though wellies aren't a bad shout in winter.

This is a walker's spot more than a sit-down attraction. There's no visitor centre or marked trail that I could find, so come prepared with a map or a decent GPS app. The trees provide good shelter, which matters in Pembrokeshire weather, and on a clear day you get glimpses toward the coast. Expect to spend an hour or two depending on how far you fancy going - it's the sort of woods you can wander through rather than tick off.

Families with older kids will get more from it than those with toddlers in buggies. It's genuine woodland, not a manicured nature reserve, so it has that slightly wild feel that some families love and others find a bit much. No facilities that I'm aware of, so sort yourselves out in Fishguard first.

Stay at The Hide or Trewrach if you want the glamping experience, or Fishguard Bay Resort if you're after something more conventional. Esgyrn works well as a morning walk before heading to the beaches or the town itself - not a destination on its own, but a proper addition to a Pembrokeshire break.
