Ewelme Recreation Ground

Just outside Wallingford, Ewelme Recreation Ground is a proper local favourite - the kind of place that doesn't announce itself with fanfare but rewards a quiet afternoon. It's a working nature reserve with meadows, woodland paths, and a small stream that actually feels like somewhere wild, not a manicured park. The walking's gentle and undemanding, which suits families with younger children or anyone after a proper breather rather than a hike.

You'll see wildflowers in season, birds if you're patient, and the kind of peace that's increasingly rare near towns. There's nothing flashy about it - no visitor centre or café - but that's partly the charm. It's free to wander, and you can spend anywhere from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on mood. Spring and early summer are best; winter gets a bit muddy and featureless.

If you're basing yourself at The Chilterns View or one of the other caravan parks nearby, this is a worthwhile morning or late-afternoon walk.
