Fairy Cove

The cove itself is tucked into the Devon coastline near Paignton, a proper little pocket of beach and rock formations that feels properly removed from the busier stretches nearby. Low tide reveals a decent expanse of sand and a jumble of weathered boulders - the sort of place where kids will spend hours hunting for crabs and splashing about in the shallows. The rock pools are the main draw, honestly. They're packed with starfish, anemones, and the usual seaside life if you time it right.

It's not a jaw-dropping vista. The "fairy" bit in the name feels like a stretch - no magical grottoes or anything dramatic. What you get instead is a sheltered beach backed by low cliffs and scrubby vegetation, the kind of place locals know about and tourists often miss. That's rather the point. Families with younger kids will get a solid afternoon out of it; teenagers less so unless they're into rock pooling or want a quiet spot to sit about. Walkers passing through the area might add it to a coastal loop, but it's not a destination in itself.

Free to access, and you'll want to arrive around two hours either side of low tide for the pools to be worth your time. Parking can be tight on busy days. If you're staying at Hoburne Devon Bay or Waterside Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy enough detour - well within a morning's outing. Come in spring or early autumn when the crowds thin out; summer weekends bring every family within ten miles.
