Round Hill

Views across Torbay unfold properly once you've huffed your way up this grassy summit near Paignton. Round Hill isn't massive - you're not conquering Snowdon here - but the 360-degree panorama takes in the coastline from Torquay round to Brixham, with the red cliffs of Devon stretching beyond.

Walkers will appreciate the straightforward path to the top, though it's steep enough to get your heart pumping. Families with older children will manage it fine, but pushchairs are out of the question. The reward is worth the effort: on clear days you can spot the distinctive outline of Berry Head across the bay.

This is proper countryside rambling territory rather than a quick tourist tick-box. Allow an hour for the round trip if you're reasonably fit, longer if you want to linger at the summit with a flask. The grassy plateau makes for decent picnic spots when the wind isn't howling.

Being so close to Paignton makes it an excellent addition to a holiday park break. Several parks like Hoburne Devon Bay and Parkdean Resorts Torquay Holiday Park sit within easy striking distance, making this a good option for families wanting to escape the beach crowds for a morning. Just check the weather first - coastal hills can be temperamental.
