Fan Foel

The walk up Fan Foel is straightforward enough - a steady push from the car park, gaining height without being brutal. You're looking at roughly an hour to the summit if you're taking it easy, less if you've got the legs for it. The peak itself sits at 886 metres and rewards you with proper views across the Brecon Beacons, especially on a clear day when you can see for miles across South Wales.

It's a walker's hill, no question about it. The path is well-trodden and obvious, which means families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the final push tedious. There's nothing technical - just determination and decent footwear. The landscape around you is classic moorland: bare, windswept, and genuinely wild. That's the whole appeal, really.

Fan Foel works brilliantly as part of a broader Beacons trip rather than a standalone day out. You're close enough to Swansea for a base there, though the nearby camping options - Aber Glamping, Brecon Beacons Camping & Caravan Park, and Toad & Snail Glamping are all within a few miles - make far more sense if you're planning to tackle multiple peaks in the range. You can string several walks together easily from any of these spots.

Go midweek if possible. Weekends pull the crowds, and this isn't the sort of place that improves with company. Early morning light makes the moorland dramatic, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself.
