Fenham Hill

The walk up Fenham Hill rewards you with views across the Northumberland borderlands that stretch clear to the coast on a decent day. It's not a tough climb - nothing that'll have your legs screaming - but it's exposed enough that wind can be a proper nuisance, especially when you're after that summit moment.

What you get is honest moorland scenery rather than dramatic peaks. Rolling grassland, stone walls, and if you're lucky, red grouse and mountain hares picking through the heather. The hill sits just inland from Berwick-upon-Tweed, making it an easy add-on if you're exploring the Tweed Valley proper, or taking a break from the caravan parks clustered nearby like Haven Haggerston Castle or Barn at Beal.

This is one for walkers who like a bit of solitude without needing technical skills. History types won't find much up here - it's the landscape that talks. Most people knock it out in under two hours there and back, so it fits well into a day that includes Berwick's town walls or a coastal walk down to Coldstream. Bring a windproof jacket and decent boots. The ground can be boggy after rain, and there's no cafe at the top, so pack a flask if you want to sit and actually enjoy the view without freezing.

Best visited between May and September when the weather's less likely to sour. Worth the effort if you're in the area, though don't expect the dramatics of higher peaks further south.
