Fenn's Wood

Walking into Fenn's Wood feels like stepping back in time. This ancient woodland near Whitchurch is one of those proper old forests where you half-expect to bump into a medieval forester round the next bend. The trees are tall and dense, creating that wonderful cathedral-like quiet you only get in really established woodlands.

It's genuinely brilliant for anyone who wants a serious walk without the crowds. Walkers will find real satisfaction here - the paths wind through different sections of the wood, and you get the sense you're exploring rather than just ambling. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen leaves depending on season, which means it's muddy in winter but magical in autumn when everything's turned bronze and gold.

Families with older kids will get the most out of it. Young children might find the lack of play equipment and wide open spaces a bit limiting after an hour or so, but anyone who enjoys natural history and trees will be fascinated. You're looking at a couple of hours minimum to do it justice.
