Fforest Fawr Geopark

The landscape around Fforest Fawr tells a geological story that's been millions of years in the making. This geopark sprawls across Powys in Mid Wales, centred roughly between Neath and the heart of the Brecon Beacons, and it's genuinely fascinating if you're interested in how the land beneath your feet actually came to be.

What you're looking at here is a protected area designated for its outstanding geology - think ancient rock formations, limestone pavements, waterfalls, and valleys carved out by glaciers during the ice age. The landscape itself is the attraction. There are walking trails threading through the valleys, particularly around the waterfalls, and you can spend a afternoon tracing how different rock types influence the vegetation and the way water moves across the terrain.

It's best suited to walkers and geology enthusiasts rather than families seeking a quick outing, though kids with an interest in rocks and nature will find it engaging. You could easily spend half a day exploring if you're thorough about it, longer if you're tackling one of the more ambitious trails.

The geopark works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Toad & Snail, Four Falls, or Aber Glamping are all within a few miles - or at Brecon Beacons Camping & Caravan Park. You get proper walking country without needing to venture far from base. Spring and autumn are ideal for visiting, when the weather's cooperative and you won't be battling summer crowds.

Be prepared: it's remote, mobile signal can be patchy, and there aren't obvious visitor facilities. Bring a map and good shoes.
