Maen Llia

You'll find Maen Llia standing alone in moorland above Neath - a Bronze Age stone circle that's been here for roughly four thousand years, which rather puts a weekend break into perspective. It's just a handful of upright stones now, weathered and lichen-covered, but there's something properly striking about it. The walk up takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest car park, through open country with decent views across the Brecon Beacons. On a clear day you can see why someone chose this spot to arrange rocks in a circle.

This is one for walkers and history types rather than anyone expecting manicured attractions. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities at all - just the stones and the wind. Kids might enjoy the walk itself, but they won't be entertained by the site for long. Admission is free and the site is open whenever you fancy visiting it.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Aber Glamping or Four Falls are both within five miles - it makes a good morning outing combined with other walks in the area. The Brecon Beacons Camping & Caravan Park sits five miles away and offers a proper base for exploring mid-Wales. The site works best as part of a broader walking holiday rather than a destination in itself. Go if you're into archaeology or just fancy a quiet moorland walk with some genuine history. Miss it if you need entertainment value.
