Ffridd Fach

Walking into Ffridd Fach feels like stepping off the map entirely. This forest sits tucked into the hills above Llwyngwril, and the moment you're among the trees, the Cardigan Bay views and the noise of the coastal towns disappear completely. It's proper woodland - dense conifers mixed with deciduous growth, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

The trails wind through with decent gradient, so it's less of a Sunday stroll and more of a proper walk. You're looking at anything from 45 minutes to a couple of hours depending on which paths you take. Families with young kids might find the steeper sections a bit much, but older children who've got their walking legs will enjoy the sense of discovery. Serious walkers will appreciate the network and the elevation gain without it being relentless.

What strikes you most is how the forest feels genuinely remote despite being so close to the coast. The canopy blocks out enough light that you get that moody, almost Scandinavian atmosphere on grey days. Summer's probably best for visibility, but autumn when the deciduous trees turn is actually when it's most interesting to look at.

Being free and unmanned (no visitor centre or facilities that I could find), it works brilliantly as a mid-week bolt-on if you're staying at Cae Du Campsite or Gwynedd Holiday Home Park. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly the kind of place that makes a park holiday feel less cookie-cutter. No crowds, no entrance fees, just trees and gradients.
