Findhorn

The village of Findhorn sits just outside Forres on the Moray coast, and it's the sort of place that catches you off guard. Most folk are here for one reason - the spiritual community that settled here in the 1960s and somehow became Scotland's most famous intentional village. You can wander the streets, pop into the community shop, grab decent coffee, and pick up handmade goods. The whole thing feels genuine rather than staged, which is refreshing.

What makes it worth a stop is less about grand attractions and more about atmosphere. The beach access is decent - wide stretches of sand that don't get overrun - and the village itself is compact enough to explore in an hour. Families will find it low-key and pleasant; kids won't be entertained for hours, but it's a nice walk-around. History types and spiritually curious visitors tend to linger longer, reading the noticeboards and chatting to residents.

It's free to wander, though you'll spend money at the cafe if you're sensible. Come on a clear day when the light's good - grey weather makes it feel a bit dreary. Don't go expecting theme parks or major attractions; go if you want somewhere genuine and a bit different from the usual Highland stops.
