Walking into Fir Plantation feels like stepping into another climate entirely - the tall conifers create a dense canopy that blocks out the Norfolk sky and keeps things cool even on warm days. It's a proper forest, not a manicured nature reserve, with dark soil underfoot and the kind of silence you don't get anywhere else around here.

This is working forestland, planted generations ago, and it shows. The trees are tall and tightly packed, which makes it feel wilder than the gentle Norfolk countryside suggests. You'll find paths threading through, though they're not sign-posted with the usual walking route infrastructure - it's more about following what looks passable and doubling back if you hit a dead end.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those who want something a bit different from the coastal paths that dominate the area. It's also decent for a quick forest walk with kids if they're up for spotting wildlife, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. Allow an hour or so for a proper mooch about.

Being east of Holt and free to access, it works well as a break from the holiday parks clustered nearby - North Norfolk Camping Glamping and Kelling Heath are both within four miles. It's not dramatic, and it won't blow your mind, but if you're staying in the area for a week, it's worth one afternoon just for the change of scenery. Bring a decent pair of boots; it can get boggy in patches.
