Old Warren

Old Warren is a working forest just east of Holt where you can actually walk among proper Norfolk woodland without the crowds. It's managed actively - you'll see signs of forestry work, which some visitors find a bit jarring if you're after pristine wilderness, but it keeps things open and accessible rather than letting it turn into impenetrable scrub.

The appeal here is straightforward. You get woodland trails that take between 30 minutes and two hours depending on which route you fancy, a mix of conifers and broadleaf trees, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Norfolk in the first place. Bird spotters do well here - woodpeckers, nuthatches, the usual woodland cast. In spring the bluebells are decent, though nothing to plan your holiday around.

It works best for walkers with a realistic fitness level. Families with small kids will manage shorter loops but might find it a touch dull after an hour - there's no play area or visitor centre, just trees and paths. History types should know the name comes from medieval rabbit warrens that were kept on this land, though there's nothing visible of that now.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Kelling Heath or North Norfolk Camping are closest at under four miles - Old Warren makes a solid half-morning addition to a day out. Pair it with a proper walk along the coast at nearby Kelling or Sheringham and you've got yourself a decent day. Access is free and there are no formal opening hours, though obviously you go during daylight.
