Fishlake Covert

The woodland at Fishlake pulls you in gradually. There's no grand entrance or visitor centre to announce itself - just a proper forest that gets denser the further you venture in from the Goole side. Mature trees tower overhead, the canopy thick enough that even on bright days you're walking in dappled half-light. It's the kind of place that feels older than it probably is, with good paths threading through and enough space that you won't be bumping into crowds even on weekends.

Walkers get the most from Fishlake. The terrain is flat and manageable - no scrambling or steep climbs - which makes it ideal if you're after a gentle couple of hours rather than a proper hike. Bird watchers come here too, and they're right to. The quietness means you've got a decent chance of spotting something interesting, though bring binoculars and patience. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main tracks, though the novelty probably wears off after ninety minutes or so.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of that I'm aware of, and admission appears free. Go early if you can, especially in autumn when the light through the trees is genuinely worth the trip. Between Rivers Camping sits barely over a mile away, making this an easy add-on to a park-based break in the area. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's the sort of place you'll find yourself thinking about weeks later - good, uncomplicated woodland walking with real character.
