Hannes Ing Covert

A proper Yorkshire woodland, Hannes Ing Covert sits just outside Goole and makes for a solid morning's ramble if you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - dense trees, quiet paths, decent for a woodland walk without the crowds you'd get at some of the bigger nature reserves.

The covert is manageable in size, so you're not committing to a full day's hiking. An hour or ninety minutes covers it comfortably, which makes it ideal if you've got restless kids or simply fancy stretching your legs between campsite meals. The woodland itself is unremarkable in the grand scheme of things - no dramatic vistas or rare species that'll make you gasp - but that's precisely why it works. It's refreshingly low-key.

Base yourself at Between Rivers Camping, Mooreacres, or Apple Blossom Caravan and Camping, all within five miles, and you've got a decent little nature break without needing to drive far. The flat terrain suits families with younger walkers, and there's something to be said for wandering through trees when you've spent the day at a static caravan. Go in spring or autumn when the light's better and you won't be battling midges. Winter's passable too, though it can get muddy.

It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's free, it's local, and it does the job.
