Fishpond Lane nature reserve

A quiet corner of the Fens that most people drive straight past. Fishpond Lane nature reserve is one of those spots where you actually see wildlife rather than just hoping you might - the ponds attract wintering wildfowl, and on a decent morning you'll spot teal, wigeon, and if you're lucky, something rarer. It's a proper working wetland reserve, managed for conservation, which means it looks less like a manicured park and more like actual nature.

The main draw is the birdwatching. Walkers enjoy it too - there's a decent path that doesn't demand much fitness, though it can get muddy depending on the season. Winter and early spring are the best times when migrating birds are passing through. Photography types will have their moments, particularly at dusk when the light softens across the water. Children will find it underwhelming if they expect crowds and facilities - this is quiet, contemplative stuff. One or two hours is enough unless you're seriously into your ornithology.

Being only a couple of miles from Spalding, it works well as a half-morning excursion if you're based at one of the nearby parks. The Lawns or Delph Bank are both within easy reach, making it a manageable addition to a caravan holiday without needing a long drive. Don't expect visitor infrastructure - bring binoculars, sensible footwear, and patience. If you want marshland quietness without the crowds of better-known reserves, you've found it.
