Fittie Wynd

You'll find Fittie Wynd tucked away in Aberdeen's Footdee area - a genuine piece of working-class history that most tourists whiz straight past. It's a narrow lane lined with small stone cottages built in the 1800s, originally home to fishermen and their families. The buildings still stand much as they did then, huddled together with that proper intimate feel only old fishing communities have.

Walking through here is like stepping back about 150 years. The cottages are tiny - you realise quickly why people didn't hang about indoors - and many residents still live here, which keeps the place honest. This isn't a museum or a manicured heritage site. It's people's actual homes, so respect that when you're poking about.

History buffs will get the most from this. Kids might find it mildly interesting for fifteen minutes, then get restless. It's free to wander, takes maybe half an hour unless you're really keen on architecture and social history. The best light for photos is late afternoon when the stone glows.

If you're based at Seaview Caravan Park just down the coast, it's easily combined with a walk along the seafront or a proper look at Aberdeen's maritime museums. On its own it's brief, but paired with the rest of Footdee - the harbour, the old boatbuilding workshops - it becomes genuinely rewarding. Don't expect thrills. Expect authenticity.
