Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve

The raised bog sprawls across 1,600 acres near Callander, and it's genuinely one of Scotland's most unusual landscapes. Flanders Moss feels properly wild - sphagnum moss underfoot, rare plants dotted about, and a kind of haunting quiet that you don't often find so close to civilisation. The walking trails wind through this living, breathing peatland, and if you time it right, you'll spot dragonflies and golden plovers that most people never clock.

It's really for walkers who don't mind boggy terrain and nature enthusiasts rather than families after a quick half-hour stroll. Bring decent boots - the ground squelches in places, especially after rain. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to properly explore beyond the main paths. There's something sobering about walking across a moss this old; the peat beneath your feet has been forming for thousands of years.

The reserve sits well for a caravan holiday based around Callander. Keltie Bridge Caravan Park is under six miles away, making it an easy morning trip before heading into the Trossachs proper. Callander Woods, just over five miles out, positions you nicely for combining the moss with walks around the town's other attractions. Access appears to be free and open year-round, though winter can be grim - the paths get waterlogged and the light goes early. Spring and autumn are honestly better bets, when you're not wading through mire or shivering in perpetual drizzle.
