Floshes Hill

The walk up Floshes Hill from Hawes is one of those Yorkshire climbs that looks deceptively easy from below. You're in the heart of Wensleydale, and once you commit to the path, the moorland opens up properly - views stretch across the valley with that particular grey-green tint that limestone country gives you. It's not a long slog, but it's steep enough that you'll feel your legs working. The summit itself is modest, no dramatic cairn or shelter, just a high point where the landscape suddenly makes sense all around you.

This is a walk for people who like moving rather than standing about. You won't find crowds or cafes or any of the tourist infrastructure - it's just the hill, the wind, and whatever the Pennine weather decides to throw at you. The views on a clear day reach properly far, and that's worth the effort. On a murky Tuesday in November, it's less remarkable, but there's something quite honest about that too.

Allow a couple of hours return from Hawes town centre, depending on your pace and how much you want to potter about at the top. Free, obviously. Spring and autumn are when you'll get the best light, though serious walkers will go whenever. Base yourself at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just half a mile from town, and you've got the valley walks all around - this is proper walking country, not a family day out.
