The old cotton mill that sits beside the river in Hawes is now a proper working museum, and it's genuinely worth an hour of your time. You walk through restored machinery rooms and see how the water wheel actually powers the looms - not just a static display, but the real thing operating. The building itself is a Victorian brick structure that hasn't been over-restored to death; it still feels like a place where people worked hard.

Histoy enthusiasts will get more from it than casual passers-by, and if you've got teenagers who appreciate engineering or industrial heritage, they'll find it absorbing. Younger kids might manage twenty minutes before the novelty of 'old machines' wears off, though watching the wheel turn tends to hold their attention. The staff are knowledgeable without being annoying.

It's free entry, which is refreshing, though donations are welcome. Allow ninety minutes if you want to actually take things in rather than rush through. Summer weekends are busier, so go midweek if you can.

Perfect timing if you're based at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road - barely a mile away. After the museum you can explore the market town itself, which has proper cafes and the Wensleydale Creamery if you want to stretch the visit out.
