Flying penguins mural

You'll spot it straight away on the waterfront in Invergordon - a massive mural of penguins in flight that shouldn't exist in the Scottish Highlands but somehow absolutely does. It's the kind of thing that makes you stop mid-walk and stare, then laugh at the sheer incongruity of it all.

The mural is free to see and takes about ten minutes max, unless you're one of those people who needs the perfect angle for Instagram. It's a bit of public art that lifts the mood on the Cromarty Firth promenade, especially on grey days when you need reminding that someone's got an odd sense of humour. The penguins are genuinely well-executed - proper vibrant colours and movement.

Not really a draw in itself, but if you're based at Newmore Highland Pods nearby, it's a decent excuse for a short stroll into town. Worth ten minutes while you're getting fish and chips or a coffee. Families with younger kids will get a kick out of spotting it from the car and posing alongside it. Walkers tackling the coastal paths will pass it anyway, so don't make a special trip unless you're into street art.

Best in daylight when you can actually see the detail. There's a car park right there on the waterfront, so no faff about finding a spot.
