Fobney Island Wetland Nature Reserve

Fobney Island sits in the Reading stretch of the River Thames, a proper wildlife sanctuary that most people drive straight past without realising what's there. It's a working wetland reserve - reedy channels, open water, scrubby woodland - the sort of place where you can actually see what a river valley is supposed to look like before humans get their hands on it.

You won't find manicured paths or interpretive boards. This is honest birdwatching territory. Bring binoculars and you'll spot herons, grebes, and warblers depending on the season. Spring and autumn are when things really kick off migration-wise, though winter brings visiting wildfowl too. The walks aren't long - an hour will cover the main loop - but the slow pace suits it. Families with patient kids will manage fine; it's not stimulating enough for the under-tens unless they're genuinely into birds. Keen ornithologists and photographers will be in their element. Access is free and unrestricted for most of the year, though the reserve does close occasionally for management work - worth checking before you go.

Pair it with Wellington Country Park nearby, just 5 miles away, which has more conventional family appeal with playgrounds and open grassland. Fobney works best as a quiet morning before heading there, or as a circuit if you're spending a full day exploring the Thames valley around Reading.
