Fochabers Folk Museum and Heritage Centre

The Folk Museum in Fochabers gives you a proper sense of what life was actually like in this corner of Aberdeenshire over the past couple of centuries. You're walking through reconstructed cottages, old workshops, and farm buildings that have been shifted here to create an open-air village of sorts. There's genuine stuff on display - tools, household items, photographs - rather than the polished interpretation centres you find elsewhere.

History types will find plenty to sink their teeth into. The museum does a decent job of explaining how people lived and worked in the Highlands without being patronising about it. You'll see everything from blacksmith's forges to schoolroom setups. Allow a good two hours if you're thorough; an hour if you're just having a quick look around.

Families with older kids get more from this than toddlers do, if I'm honest. There's not much interactive stuff to keep under-eights entertained for long. The village feel is nice for a wander, but it's not theme-park stuff.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Hillhead Hideaways is excellent and only five miles away - the museum works well as a half-day activity. Pair it with a walk around Keith, the nearest town, and you've got a decent outing. It's the sort of place that matters more if you're interested in local heritage than if you're just after a casual family day out. Worth checking opening hours and admission costs before you set off from your lodge.
