Millstone Hill

The walk up Millstone Hill takes about an hour if you're not hanging about, and the summit rewards you with proper views across Aberdeenshire's rolling farmland and into the Highlands beyond. It's not a dramatic peak - don't expect Alpine drama - but on a clear day you can pick out distant mountains and see why folk have been tramping up here for centuries.

The route itself is straightforward enough, starting from near Keith. You're looking at a steady climb through moorland and rough grassland, nothing technical, though it can get boggy after rain so decent boots are worth the weight. Most walkers allow two hours for the round trip, which leaves time to sit at the top with a flask and take in the view without feeling rushed.

This works best for hill walkers after a proper morning out - those wanting more than a stroll but less than a serious scramble. Kids aged eight and up who are used to walking will manage it fine. History types might find it less compelling than some of the region's castles, though the Highlands views are genuinely good.

Staying nearby, Hillhead Hideaways is barely a mile and a half away, making it the obvious base for combining this walk with exploring the wider area. Greencraig Pods is another solid option just down the road. Use Millstone Hill as part of a bigger Aberdeenshire hiking itinerary rather than a standalone trip - it pairs well with a day tackling taller peaks or visiting Keith's whisky heritage.
