Foel Darw

Foel Darw sits just outside Brecon in Carmarthenshire, a modest peak that doesn't demand much from you but rewards a straightforward walk with proper views across the Beacons. It's not a dramatic scramble - more a steady climb through open moorland that takes the best part of an hour or so to bag the summit. The name means 'oak hill' in Welsh, though you'll find more grass than trees at the top.

Walkers will find this one satisfying without being exhausting. It fits neatly into a day's exploring around Brecon Beacons, especially if you're based at one of the local parks like Aber Glamping or Brecon Beacons Camping & Caravan Park - both within striking distance. The walk is free, obviously, and you can start from various points depending on how much effort you want to invest.

Family groups with kids aged eight upwards will get something from this. Younger children might struggle with the length, but there's nothing technical to worry about. History enthusiasts won't find much to detain them - this is about the landscape and exercise rather than archaeological interest.

Timing matters. Winter can turn the moorland boggy and visibility drops fast when cloud rolls in, which happens regularly in these hills. Spring and autumn are your best bets. Allow two to three hours door-to-door if you're camping nearby. It's a solid, unpretentious outing - the sort of walk that doesn't make Instagram sing but leaves you genuinely glad you went.
