Forestry Commission. Cullaloe

The Forestry Commission land at Cullaloe sits just outside Dunfermline and gives you proper woodland walking without the tourist machinery. It's essentially a working forest where you can get among the trees on a handful of waymarked routes, and on a decent day the light filtering through the conifers is genuinely lovely. Nothing fancy - just forest, paths, and the odd bench if your legs need a rest.

You'll want boots or proper walking shoes; it's muddy in patches and roots catch people out. Most folk spend between an hour and two hours here depending on which route they pick. The whole thing is free, which is the main attraction for anyone doing a budget holiday. It's not dramatic or grand - don't expect viewpoints or anything Instagram-worthy - but if you're staying at Kinghorn Harbour Holiday Park down the road and the kids need to burn off energy, or you just fancy a quiet walk away from everything, this does the job well.

Historically it's less interesting than it is practical. You're here for fresh air and a proper walk through actual woodland, not story or spectacle. Families with children under eight might find it a bit samey after half an hour. Walkers and anyone after a genuine bit of forest rather than a groomed park will appreciate it. Go early on a weekday if you can - weekend mornings get busier with local runners and dog walkers.
