Foxhill Wood

The trees close in quickly at Foxhill Wood, which sits just outside Shildon in County Durham. It's a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured country park - think winding paths through mixed woodland where you'll actually feel like you've stepped away from things. The canopy does most of the work here, especially in summer when the shade becomes genuinely welcome.

This is the sort of place that rewards a slow meander rather than a rushed circuit. Families with younger kids will manage it fine, though there's nothing specifically laid on for them - it's just trees and paths. Walkers who like a bit of peace will get more from it than those expecting facilities or a visitor centre. You're looking at anything from twenty minutes to an hour depending on how lost you want to get.

The real appeal is how close it sits to Shildon yet feels genuinely separate from the town. If you're staying at Eden Grange Glamping nearby, it's worth the short drive over for an afternoon. The wood doesn't demand much - no entrance fees that I'm aware of, no timed visits. Just turn up and walk. It won't blow your mind, but on a decent day it's exactly what a bit of North East woodland should be: accessible, quiet, and honest about what it is. Good for clearing your head between other things rather than a destination in itself.
