Freeby Wood

Walk into Freeby Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth woodland - the kind where the canopy is thick enough that it feels like dusk even at midday. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means gnarled oaks, tangled undergrowth, and the sort of quietness that makes you remember why people used to find woods slightly unnerving.

The main appeal here is straightforward: it's a solid woodland walk without the tourist infrastructure of bigger attractions. Families with kids who can manage uneven ground will find it engaging enough - there's genuine exploring to be done, fallen logs to clamber over, and the satisfying business of working out which path actually goes somewhere. Adults who just want to disappear into trees for an hour will rate it more highly than those expecting waymarked trails and picnic benches.

Facilities aren't its strong suit. There's no visitor centre, no car park facilities that I'm aware of, and you'll want to sort out parking in or near Oakham before heading out. The wood itself appears to be free access, though it's worth checking locally. Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander depending on fitness and how often you stop to appreciate the silence.

If you're based at The Grange or Eye Kettleby Lakes - both within five miles - Freeby Wood works well as a morning activity before heading to somewhere with more facilities. It's not a destination in itself, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to Leicestershire rather than staying in town.
