Laxton's Covert

The woodland at Laxton's Covert, just outside Oakham, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works so well as a half-day break from caravan park life. It's a proper forest walk, densely planted and atmospheric, with enough track to keep you occupied for an hour or two without demanding serious fitness levels.

What you get here is straightforward: miles of woodland trails threading through mixed forest, the kind where the light filters through differently depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers. Summer is thick and green. Autumn turns it all golden and crunchy underfoot. Winter strips it back to bare branches and better sightlines, which some prefer.

This works well for families with kids who can manage a moderate walk - not a scramble, just a consistent plod through the trees. Dog walkers come here regularly, which tells you the ground is manageable. It's less about destination views and more about that meditative business of walking through decent woodland.

Timing-wise, two to three hours is realistic if you're not rushing. Go early on weekends if you want it quieter. Free access as far as I can tell, no facilities to speak of, so bring water.

If you're staying at Greendale Farm or Eye Kettleby Lakes nearby, this is an easy add-on to your park routine - close enough not to feel like a proper outing, but far enough into the woods to feel like proper escape.
