Frid Wood

Walk into Frid Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper mature woodland - the kind where the canopy is thick enough to muffle the world outside. It's mixed forest, mostly, with beech and oak dominating, and the ground is soft with decades of leaf litter underfoot. There are proper trails running through here, some well-trodden, others quieter, and you'll spot the occasional clearing where light floods through.

This is a walker's wood rather than a destination in itself. You're not coming here for a view or a specific landmark - you're coming for the walk. It's the sort of place where you lose an hour without meaning to, following paths that seem to lead somewhere interesting, or just standing still listening to nothing in particular. Kids will enjoy it if they're the exploring sort, but they'll get restless if you need them to sit still.

Nearest town is Maidstone, which is only a few miles away, making Frid Wood an easy half-day detour. If you're based at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Chegworth Mill Glamping, both within five miles or so, you could easily slot an afternoon walk in here without it eating into your holiday plans. Free to access, no facilities to speak of - bring water and sensible shoes. Best visited in spring or autumn when the canopy's thinner and there's decent underfoot conditions. Summer can be buggy; winter's muddy but atmospheric.
