Fritton Lake Country Park

Fritton Lake sits just inland from Great Yarmouth, a proper Norfolk water - shallow, reedy, and alive with birds. The country park wraps around it, giving you walking trails through woodland and across open grassland with decent views across the water. You'll spot grebes, tufted ducks, and if you're lucky, the occasional heron standing stock still in the shallows.

It's the sort of place that works best if you're into birdwatching or simply want a quiet walk away from the seafront crowds. Families with young kids might find an hour enough, though older children who enjoy spotting wildlife could easily stretch it to two or three hours. The trails are well-marked and mostly flat, which is a genuine relief in Norfolk where things get muddy fast after rain.

Being only a mile or so from Haven Wild Duck Holiday Park and three miles from Haven Hopton, it slots nicely into a week's caravan holiday in the area. You can knock it out mid-week when the bigger attractions get rammed, then head to Great Yarmouth for the seafront entertainment if the weather turns. The site's free to explore, though you'll want binoculars if you're serious about the birds. Spring and autumn are your best bets for migration watching; summer can feel a bit quiet.
