Fronserth Farm Alpacas

You'll find yourself face-to-face with the most ridiculously calm animals once you arrive at Fronserth Farm, just outside Llandrindod Wells. Alpacas. Proper alpacas - the long-necked, woolly kind that look perpetually amused by human existence. The farm lets you get up close with the herd, and honestly, it's the sort of thing that sounds twee on paper but actually works. Kids lose their minds in the best way; adults find it genuinely relaxing. You can hand-feed them, watch them potter about the paddocks, and take photos that will make your Instagram followers question your taste. Allow a good hour if you want to do it properly rather than just dash in and out. The staff know their animals inside out and aren't the type to rush you through.

It's a decent stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Disserth or The Pines are barely a mile away, making it an easy morning or afternoon outing. Works particularly well as a break between longer countryside walks around the Elan Valley. Families with younger children find it engaging without being demanding; older kids might think it's a bit tame unless they're genuinely into animals. Timing-wise, spring and early summer are best when the alpacas are most active and the Welsh weather isn't being difficult. Definitely worth ringing ahead to check current opening times and whether visits are by appointment - small farms like this can be variable with their schedules. Not a all-day affair, but it fills a gap nicely in a Powys holiday.
