Frys Copse

Dense woodland carpets this quiet corner of the Isle of Wight, just inland from Yarmouth's harbour bustle. Frys Copse feels properly wild - the sort of place where fallen trees create natural climbing frames and thick canopy blocks out most of the sky. It's a small pocket of ancient woodland that rewards those who venture off the coastal path.

Families with adventurous kids will find plenty to explore here. The undergrowth is thick enough for proper hide-and-seek, while dog walkers appreciate the network of informal paths winding through the trees. Bird watchers do well too - the copse attracts species that prefer deeper woodland to the island's more open heathland.

Expect to spend about an hour here unless you're really into woodland rambling. There's no formal entrance or facilities, so bring your own water and expect muddy boots after wet weather. The paths can be a bit vague in places, but you're never far from the edge of the wood.

Staying at The Orchards or Camp Wight puts you within easy walking distance, making this a decent morning diversion before heading to Yarmouth proper. It won't compete with the island's coastal spectacle, but for a change of pace from cliff walks and beach days, Frys Copse delivers that proper woodland atmosphere the island sometimes lacks.
