Fulbourn

The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge is where most people head first, but Fulbourn's art scene punches well above its weight for a village just east of the city. The gallery here focuses on contemporary work and local artists - the kind of place where you might stumble on something genuinely interesting rather than cycling through the usual crowd-pleasers.

It's compact enough that you won't need more than an hour, which makes it ideal if you're already exploring Cambridge and fancy a quieter alternative to the museum crush. The staff tend to be knowledgeable without being precious, and there's usually a decent turnover of exhibitions so repeat visits aren't wasted. Worth checking what's on before you go though - some shows land better than others.

Fulbourn itself is unremarkable as villages go, but that's partly why visiting feels like you've found something the tour buses miss. It's a proper working village with a decent pub and a helpful high street rather than a chocolate-box postcard. Getting there by bike from Cambridge is straightforward and takes about twenty minutes.
