Funkieston Wood

The forest floor here is thick with pine needles, and you'll know within five minutes whether you're actually going to enjoy wandering through Funkieston Wood or if you'd rather be somewhere with a view. It's a proper working woodland near Macduff in Aberdeenshire - dense, dark in places, and genuinely quiet once you're a few minutes in.

There are paths through the trees, though they're not manicured or sign-posted to death. Woodland walkers will appreciate it more than casual strollers. Kids who like hunting for sticks and building dens could lose themselves here for a couple of hours. Anyone expecting open vistas or dramatic scenery should look elsewhere - this is about being in the trees, not looking at the landscape from them.

The whole place has a working forest feel. You might see evidence of timber management or forestry work. It's free to walk through, and there's no set opening hours because it's just... woodland you can access. You'll need decent shoes and probably half a day if you're properly exploring it rather than just poking around for fifteen minutes.

Stay at Whitehills Caravan Park, which is barely four miles away and genuinely five-star rated, and you've got a solid spot for Aberdeenshire. Banff Links is also close if you prefer something slightly different. Neither will feel like you're staying in the middle of nowhere - Macduff itself is a proper working fishing town with actual character, not a tourist theme park version of a town.
