Tarlair Outdoor Swimming Pool (unused)

You'll find the crumbling remains of Tarlair Outdoor Swimming Pool just outside Macduff, a Victorian-era lido that's been abandoned for years. It's one of those places that shouldn't work as an attraction at all - the pool is drained, the changing rooms are derelict, and the whole thing has that peculiar haunted quality of forgotten leisure architecture. Yet people come here anyway, drawn by the sheer strangeness of it and the views across the Moray Firth.

This is absolutely a spot for photography enthusiasts and people fascinated by industrial decay rather than anyone hoping for an actual swim. The pool structure itself tells a story of post-war optimism - designed to serve holidaymakers in an era when a seaside lido was the height of seaside entertainment. Walking around the perimeter, you can see where families once changed, where lifeguards watched over swimmers, where there was genuine community use. Now it's just concrete and rust.

Macduff itself is a working fishing town, not particularly geared up for tourism, which means Tarlair feels genuinely off the beaten track. Most people visiting the area are staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Myrus Holiday Park and Wester Bonnyton are both within walking distance if you fancy exploring on foot. Allow an hour to have a proper look around, take some photos, and soak in the melancholy atmosphere. Free to visit, obviously. Go on an overcast day if you can - the light suits the mood far better than bright sunshine.
