Furnace Lake

A modest water body just outside Horsham, Furnace Lake is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a decent spot for a quiet walk, particularly if you're camping nearby at Riverside Farm or Sussex Topiary Campsite - both within spitting distance.

The lake itself offers a straightforward circuit if you want to stretch your legs after a morning in the tent. It's not dramatic or particularly large, but there's something calming about it. The water reflects the surrounding trees nicely, especially on still days. It's the kind of place where you might spot a fisherman or two, given how accessible it is from the local caravan sites.

Family groups with young kids will find it manageable - nothing too strenuous, and it breaks up a camping holiday without requiring a long drive. History buffs might be interested in the furnace connection (hence the name), though there's not much visible evidence of industrial heritage these days.

Worth allowing maybe an hour for a walk round if you're staying locally. It's free to access, which is a bonus. Don't expect dramatic views or Instagram moments, but it's solid for a leg-stretch between Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and the surrounding Surrey countryside. If you're after something grander, you'd be better off pushing towards the South Downs. For a quick circuit though, it serves its purpose.
