Furze Clift Plantation

Walk into Furze Clift Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by proper Devon woodland. This isn't a manicured country estate or a tourist trail with helpful signs at every turn. It's a genuine forest where the trees do the talking and you're left to find your own way through the canopy.

What you get here is straightforward: dense woodland with footpaths that meander through a mix of conifers and broadleaves. The ground is soft underfoot, the light filters through in patches, and if you time it right - early morning or weekday afternoon - you'll barely see another soul. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

This works best for woodland walkers and anyone after a proper escape from Devon's busier spots. Families with kids who like exploring will manage fine, though under-tens might find the lack of "attractions" a bit dull after an hour or so. Photography enthusiasts will find moody forest light worth the visit, especially on misty days. History buffs get less here than they would at some of Devon's grander estates, but the woodland itself tells a story if you know how to read it.

Give yourself ninety minutes to two hours depending on how deep you want to wander. Free to access as far as I could tell, no facilities to speak of. Tiverton sits nearby as your base, and if you're staying at Nirvana Glamping just down the road, this makes an excellent morning circuit before breakfast. Quiet, undeveloped, and refreshingly ungimmicky.
